After debuting in the form of concept art, Captain America’s ally Falcon has finally taken flight in the form of actor Anthony Mackie. And as the pictures show, it’s not so much flight as being pulled backwards while pulling a total Wesley (very, very deep reference to “Angel” for all the Whedon-ites out there). The pictures come courtesy of WENN, who snapped the pictures while on the set of “Captain America: The Winter Solider. The photos can be checked out here.
Anthony Mackie recently joined the shoot after wrapping up his promotional tour for “Pain & Gain.” Of course the actor barely managed to contain his enthusiasm for the role while on the tour; he’s dropped a lot of hints about Falcon’s role in the sequel. He’s said that his costume (possibly glimpsed above) makes Falcon look “like a bad mother-what.” Now that we’ve seen these photos, we’d have to agree.
It’s possible that this is not Falcon’s final costume. This scene could easily come prior to him assuming the role, as evidenced by Falcon’s notable lack of wings. Of course it’s possible that the wings will be mostly CGI. Mackie is wearing goggles, though, and I’d imagine those would come in handy when going airborne. Overall, I’d be surprised if Mackie doesn’t get a costume that’s just a touch more faithful to his comic book look.
The Marvel films have so far done a great job of adapting characters’ comic book looks to the big screen while making them believable, and I hope Falcon gets as iconic of a look as the other superheroes. Right now he just looks like a military guy. With cool goggles.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” opens in theaters on April 4th, 2014.
