‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’: 5 Retro Guardians For Consideration

by Ryan Rigley

Last week, if you asked any comic book fan which characters would be appearing in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, they’d have a simple answer for you: Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon. Now, however, things seem to be a bit more muddled. Earlier this week, Deadline broke the news of “Walking Dead” star Michael Rooker being cast in the film as original Guardians member Yondu Udonta.

Hailing from the planet Centauri IV, Yondu appears in the earliest incarnation of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” comic book series, which made its debut in 1969’s “Marvel Super-Heroes” #18, unlike the rest of the characters already set to appear in the film. With the assumption that “Guardians of the Galaxy” would only be featuring modern Guardians now blown completely out of the water, we here at MTV Splash Page have taken it upon ourselves to compile a list of five more original Guardians that could potentially appear in James Gunn’s film adaptation.

Major Victory
The original leader and founder of the first incarnation of the Guardians, Vance Astrovik was actually born here on Earth. Growing up with an obsession for outer space, Vance would eventually volunteer himself for a long-term, interstellar space mission which places him in suspended animation for centuries. In addition to being the leader of the original Guardians, Major Victory also makes an unexpected appearance in the most recent version of the Guardians of the Galaxy series.

Born on the planet Xandar, Pyeus Kril would later go on to become the herald of Galactus, a member of the Nova Corps and an honorary member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Bestowed with the Power Cosmic, Firelord has all of the cosmic energy of a living star. He carries a staff with him at all times that allows him to channel his cosmic flames and can also travel at the speed of light.

A dwarf from Pluto, Martinex has skin composed of organic crystalline isotopes which grants him the ability to withstand extremely high pressures and extremely low temperatures. He is a scientist first and foremost, and for this reason was appointed as the reluctant leader of the Guardians for over two years. Upon returning to Earth, Martinex quits the team and sets out to form his own intergalactic crime-fighting group: the Galactic Guardians.

A female Skrull born in an alternate universe, Replica is a member of both the Universal Church of Truth and the 90’s incarnation of Guardians of the Galaxy. When the Guardians first visit her home planet (New Haven), Replica hides aboard their spaceship as a tiny insect only to be discovered by Yondu Udonta. Being of the Skrull persuasion, Replica has the awesome ability to shape-shift at a moment’s notice.

With his adoptive parents murdered by the Reavers of Arcturus, Stakar was raised on the planet Arcturus by a Reaver named Ogord. At some point early on in his life, Stakar and his sister (Aleta) accidentally woke the Hawk-God who later endows them both with mysterious powers, giving them the ability to manipulate both light and darkness. Starhawk has a special precognition that comes as a direct result of him re-living his life over a countless amount of times.
