'R.I.P.D.' Trailer Enters The Land Of The Living

by Eddie Wright

The first trailer for the dead cops hunt the dead flick "R.I.P.D.," based on the Dark Horse comic series, is here and it looks like a blast of goofy fun.

Jeff Bridges -- in full-on scenery-chewing mode -- is Roy Pulsipher (his name is Powell in the comic), dead cowboy. Ryan Reynolds is Nick Cruz Walker, newly-dead cop. Both men work for the Rest in Peace Department and answer to one boss, the BIG boss.

The film is based on Peter M. Lenkov's 2000 mini-series and has been in production in one form or another for over a decade. Previously to Bridges, Zack Galifianakis was cast as Roy, though Bridges makes way more sense.

Fans of the comic should already notice some changes between the film and the series, aside from Roy's last name. One: in the comic, Reynolds' character is ushered into the force by a J. Jonah Jameson-type fella named Captain Barnett; in the film it appears Mary-Louise Parker is calling the shots. Two: the conceit of the deceased coppers taking on different forms is completely created for the film. Three: in the book, Reynolds character is gunned down at a house; in the film, it looks like he bites it in some type of factory. But we can already see the signs of a faithful adaptation. The spiritually-branded badge is in there, both men look like their comic counterparts, and the silly vibe is fully intact.

The only concern I have thus far is the startling similarities to "Men in Black." But what can you do? Movies, ya know?

"R.I.P.D." is in theaters June 28, 2013.
