Clark Gregg On ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ And Agent Coulson’s Return

by Brett White

Collider caught up with Clark Gregg and asked him pretty much every single question one would want to ask Clark Gregg. In one video, Gregg touches on everything from his role in the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot to whether or not he thinks the much beloved agent will return in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films. You can check out the entire interview below; it’s six minutes very well spent, if only to see Clark Gregg speak words and move his face around in that endearing and good-natured way that we’ve all come to love.

The most interesting bit of information, at least from my point of view, is the tiny bit of clarification given about Coulson’s role in S.H.I.E.L.D. Comic book characters have come back from the dead in ridiculous ways before, using everything from time bullets to pocket dimensions and clones; the MCU is just a little more grounded than its comic book counterpart, though.

“After people see the show, they’ll have some clue as to why I’m still there, still breathing,” Gregg teases. “But I don’t think they’ll know everything.”

This leads me to believe that Coulson’s return won’t be a quick fix solved by some MacGuffin. Director Joss Whedon has some experience with this. As the man responsible for bringing both Buffy Summers and Colossus back to life (in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Astonishing X-Men,” respectively), Whedon has proven that he has the skills to make cheating death a big deal without cheapening the death itself.

Of course with Coulson back from the dead, there’s the possibility that he could be in future Marvel movies.

“If my schedule doesn’t conflict, and they need him in one of the movies, will they come calling? My feeling is that there’s no breaks in continuity with this and the Marvel movie universe. It makes sense in that universe, and I certainly feel like his chances of appearing in those movies are far better than when he was far out dead.”

If all goes according to plan and ABC orders “S.H.I.E.L.D.” to series in the next couple months, it’s possible Gregg could be back on the bigscreen in time for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which starts filming shortly.

And that would be awesome.
