'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Casting Call: Other TV Icons For Marvel's Consideration

Guardians of the Galaxy

by Brett White

With "Parks and Recreation" star Chris Pratt confirmed for Star-Lord and Jason Momoa of "Game of Thrones" fame in talks to go green as Drax the Destroyer, it looks as if the big-screen adaptation of "Guardians of the Galaxy" is going to be filled with popular actors from the disparate worlds of television dramas and comedies. With that in mind, we're going to take a crack at casting the rest of the main squad, pulling one name from each genre.

Rocket Raccoon – Aziz Ansari or Bryan Cranston

There are two ways a short, anthropomorphic, wise-cracking, laser-wielding raccoon in militaristic garb can go, and Ansari and Cranston embody those two ways. With Ansari, Pratt's fellow "Parks and Rec" star, Rocket would be the fast-talking comic relief. With Cranston, the terrifyingly intense Walter White on "Breaking Bad," Rocket's humor would derive from the take-no-prisoners growl coming out of a cute little snout. Either way is a success.

Groot – Will Arnett or Mandy Patinkin

Groot is a walking, fighting tree that pretty much just says one phrase repeatedly ("I am GROOT!"). The comedic choice would have to be Will Arnett. Even before his current work on "Up All Night" and his star-making turn on "Arrested Development," Arnett was making a living using his distinctly deep voice in commercials. And if any actor is able to put real inflection and emotion behind the same three words, it's Mandy Patinkin. The "Homeland" actor knows a thing or thirty thousand about acting and would provide the role with some serious gravitas.

Gamora – Zooey Deschanel or Christina Hendricks

The deadliest woman in the galaxy may seem like an odd choice for Zooey Deschanel, the perpetually quirky leading lady of "New Girl," but it's so odd it might just work. Deschanel is effortlessly captivating on-screen and has eyes that can only be described as otherworldly. Teach her some martial arts and how to swing a sword and Gamora could just appear. On the other hand, it's hard to think of a woman as in-charge and innately confident as Christina Hendricks on "Mad Men." With her statuesque physique, Hendricks' is ready to crack heads across the cosmos.
