Maya Hansen Is ‘The Female Robert Downey,’ Says ‘Iron Man 3′ Director Shane Black

Pepper Potts is the woman of Tony Stark’s dreams. But perhaps the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist has more in common with another — a woman like Maya Hansen, for instance.

The new “Iron Man 3” leading lady is at the center of an Empire interview with director Shane Black. According to the writer and filmmaker, Maya is an arrogant but brilliant mind — not unlike a certain other arrogant but brilliant mind we all know and love.

“We needed a snappy and exciting actor to play the part,” Black said of the scientist character played by Rebecca Hall, “and not make it this ’female scientist who takes off her glasses and suddenly she’s beautiful’. There’s a certain element about her being the female Robert Downey in a way. She’s very bratty and irreverent and quick on her feet with the one-liners, Rebecca.”

As for the role Hansen plays in the film, Marvel’s Kevin Feige kept his lips sealed, except for one vague but key detail.

“She makes a pretty astounding discovery that leads her to place – and some are healthier than others,” he said. “It’s not dissimilar to what Tony’s been through, and it’s a great parallel.”
