IRON ARMORY: Inside Iron Man’s Hulkbuster Armor

by Ryan Rigley

Take a look inside Tony Stark’s closet and what will you find? Some empty bottles of scotch, a few stacks of cash, and a plethora of Iron Man armors. It’s no secret that Mr. Stark has a suit of armor designed for practically every occasion. Hell, we’ve already seen at least four different versions of the Iron Man armor up on the big screen! Whether it’s outer space exploration or deep-sea diving, there’s no doubt that Tony has a suit designed specifically for the task at hand.

Case in point: the Hulkbuster armor, Stark’s answer to the not-so-jolly green giant. In the comics, Tony creates the Hulkbuster modular add-on with the intentions of taking on the Incredible Hulk in hand-to-hand combat. But is this something that could possibly happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

“I imagine that’s exactly what we’ll be seeing!” states Kevin Hopgood, the original artist behind the Hulkbuster armor, in a recent interview with MTV Splash Page.

“The ’Iron Man’ movies have looked exactly how I imagined when I was drawing the comic,” continues Hopgood. “I think they’ve done a great job. They’ve stayed pretty true to my War Machine design particularly.” For those of you who don’t know, Kevin Hopgood is the co-creator of the original War Machine armor. He was also the primary “Iron Man” artist from May 1992 through July 1994.

“The basic idea was ’Iron Man but bigger,'” Hopgood elaborates on his Hulkbuster designs. “So long as they get that I’ll be happy.” Making its debut in issue 304 of “Iron Man,” the Hulkbuster modular add-on is still Tony Stark’s biggest armor to date. It’s comprised entirely of impact-resistant carbon composites with a magno-hydraulic pseudo-musculature weighing in at about 175 tons.

Obviously, an onscreen fight between Iron Man and the Hulk would be a dream come true for fanboys and fangirls alike. But with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner’s budding bromance in last year’s “The Avengers,” it doesn’t seem very likely at this point in time. However, there is a certain piece of Hulkbuster concept art making its way around the Internet that looks like it would fit perfectly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

“That’s all good, except I’d prefer the dome helmet,” Hopgood comments on the concept art above. “Iron Man’s tiny head poking out of this huge armour just looks daft to my mind.” The piece of concept art in question is actually for “Avengers Initiative,” an iOS game that came out late last year. “The dome helmet was meant to suggest an extra layer of protection,” Hopgood elaborates. “The Juggernaut similarity was coincidental.”

Stark’s Hulkbuster modular add-on remains a fan favorite armor to this day, and it feels like an on-screen appearance is inevitable. The only question is, who will be victorious: Tony or Bruce?

“I seem to remember the Hulk scoring some sort of moral victory over Tony Stark,” recalls Hopgood on the original comic book battle. “However it was played out on screen, I’m sure it would involve large explosions!”
