'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV Series Takes Place After 'Avengers'

What was already considered a foregone conclusion has now been confirmed: the "S.H.I.E.L.D." television series will take place after the events of "Marvel's The Avengers."

"There is no question that it is part of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the story takes place after the battle for New York," ABC President Paul Lee told IGN. "This is S.H.I.E.L.D. They're following their own particular stories. There are characters in it, Coulson, who clearly come from 'Avengers.' So it's part of the world, but we're going to be very, very careful that we don't tread on the toes of the features and build a whole new world. And that's what Joss Whedon does better than anybody else. He's built a world for us."

The confirmed time period for "S.H.I.E.L.D." lets us know that if this takes place after "Avengers," and if Coulson is an active participant in the series, then somehow, some way, the character has survived — unless we're in for a flashback-heavy series, ala "Lost." We've listed some of our own possibilities for how Coulson can return in the past, and right now, our money is leaning pretty heavily towards the Life Model Decoy option.
