ASSEMBLING AVENGERS #17: Mockingbird

Mockingbird

by Ryan Rigley

Joss Whedon's highly-anticipated "Avengers" sequel may still be a ways off (with a release date of May 1st, 2015) but now that production on the "S.H.I.E.L.D." series has a start date (January 2013) Whedonites and Avengers-fans alike can sleep a little easier at night. Although it has yet to be confirmed, we here at MTV News have the sneaking suspicion that "S.H.I.E.L.D." will be chock full of superhero cameos, some of which might even sneak into Earth's Mightiest Sequel.

Such is the case for characters like Barbara "Bobbi" Morse (a.k.a. Mockingbird), who began her crime-fighting career as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. before becoming a card-carrying member of the Avengers, the West Coast Avengers, and the New Avengers. She was also married to Hawkeye at one point!

So what are the chances that we'll be seeing Mockingbird up on the silver screen come 2015? Click past the jump to find out!

Who?

Graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in biochemistry, Barbara Morse begins working with her former biology professor (Dr. Wilma Calvin) on a government-sponsored project to rediscover the Super Soldier Serum that was at one point used to transform Steve Rogers into Captain America. While working for the government, Barbara's impressive records come to the attention of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization and soon they invite her to work for them.

During her time at S.H.I.E.L.D., Barbara's tendency to taunt her opponent's during battle earns her the codename "Mockingbird." Eventually, she crosses paths with Clint Barton (a.k.a. Hawkeye) and the two of them hit it off almost immediately; running off together and getting married. Years later, when Hawkeye is tasked with spear-heading a new faction of superheroes, called the West Coast Avengers, Mockingbird joins him as the main driving force for the entire team.

Why?

In "The Avengers," Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff clearly have a long and illustrious history together despite the lack of clear details or information presented to us onscreen. Budapest is mentioned several times, but other than that we're kind of left in the dark. Bringing Mockingbird into the picture for "The Avengers 2" could potentially clarify that mysterious relationship between Hawkeye and Black Widow, especially if she becomes Clint's new love interest. Perhaps, Black Widow would feel compelled to remind Clint (and us) of everything that they've been through together. Maybe we'd even find out what happened in Budapest!

How?

This one is fairly obvious. Being that Mockingbird started out as an agent of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, wouldn't it make perfect sense for us to be introduced to her on the "S.H.I.E.L.D." series? Plus, with production on the series starting as soon as January, we would have plenty of time to meet Barbara Morse and watch as she's transformed into Mockingbird well before the "Avengers" sequel comes out in 2015.

In Assembling Avengers, we're picking a new Marvel Comics superhero every week and arguing why they deserve a spot on the roster for Earth's mightiest sequel. Let us know which heroes you want to see in the next "Avengers" in the comments or on Twitter!
