UPDATE: From director James Gunn’s Facebook page (via JoBlo) comes this comment: “When fan sites have a slow news day, I guess they just make sh– up. Honestly – almost all of the ’news’ about my upcoming projects has been utterly and completely false. And I really mean ’all.'” Looks like we can move this from “rumor” to “not happening.” Original story below.
Tony Stark is joining the “Guardians of the Galaxy” on the paneled page, but will he suit up for their silver screen debut as well?
That’s the word according to a new rumor from ComicBook.com that Iron Man will have a part to play in the upcoming “Guardians” movie. Though we’re considering this nothing more than a rumor for right now, we wouldn’t be completely shocked if this proved true, for a few reasons:
1. Iron Man is the most recognizable Avenger of the lot. If Marvel wants to add some proven star power to their “Guardians” gamble, there’s no better character to turn to.
2. The groundwork is already laid. Iron Man is appearing as a member of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” in their new Brian Bendis-written comic book. On top of that, Kieron Gillen’s relaunch of the “Iron Man” comics also puts the character into outer orbit. Marvel clearly wants Tony Stark in space — an upcoming movie appearance would certainly explain why.
3. It’s heavily speculated that “Guardians” will lead the way for Joss Whedon’s “Avengers” sequel. If that’s the case, having Iron Man heavily involved in the “Guardians” movie provides the next “Avengers” with a natural tie-in beyond presumed-villain Thanos. It would be nice to have a good guy featured in “Guardians” play a role in “Avengers 2,” but having the whole gang would be overbearing. On the flip side, having just Tony, already a linchpin in the Avengers squad, could do the trick.
Stay tuned for more on the rumor as we hear it. For now, we know this: the James Gunn-directed “Guardians” hits theaters on August 1, 2014 — and we can’t wait to see it.
