Indeed, a new rumor floating about today suggests that Carol Danvers not only has a part to play in Joss Whedon's second "Avengers" film, but two actresses are already in the running for the part: "Looper" leading lady Emily Blunt, and "Luther" co-star Ruth Wilson.
Some of you surely remember that Blunt's name has been attached to some Marvel Studios projects in the past, most famously her near-miss with "Iron Man 2" as Black Widow, and then again with Peggy Carter and "Captain America: The First Avenger." Blunt as Danvers feels as right as any of those casting choices to us. Given how successful "The Avengers" was both creatively and commercially, we certainly hope there's more to this than just a rumor.
Wilson, on the other hand, is a tremendous actress, but doesn't strike us as the right fit for Danvers. Personally speaking, I'd love to see her sink her teeth into a more villainous role, like Sin in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" or something similar. Then again, perhaps that's just too close to her "Luther" serial killer, Alice, for comfort.
For now, consider this as nothing more than a rumor. But if Ms. Marvel is indeed coming to "The Avengers," and if the race is down to Blunt and Wilson, which actress gets your vote?
