Now that we’ve got some information regarding the new featured characters in Joss Whedon’s “S.H.I.E.L.D.” TV series, it’s not difficult to imagine the fine Whedonverse actors who are more than capable of filling these roles.
Jewel Staite as Skye
She’s “fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.” As sweet, spunky mechanic Kaylee, Jewel Staite aced the “fun” and “caring” attributes. And Kaylee knew that she was the only one with the skills to keep Serenity flying, so Staite’s got the “smart” and “confident” part down, too.
Nathan Fillion as Grant Ward
Handsome, steady under pressure, usually quiet yet occasionally tempermental and tactless — sounds like a certain battle-weary space captain we know. Sure, Nathan Fillion may be a tad too close to middle-age to take on some of the physical challenges Ward might face. But where personality is concerned, he’s a perfect fit.
Gina Torres as Althea Rice
Also known as “The Cavalry,” Rice is a “hard-core soldier” with “crazy skills.” As she proved on “Firefly,” no one can do hard-core better than Gina Torres. Heavy weaponry? Hand-to-hand combat? All-around kickassness? No problem.
Sean Maher and Summer Glau as Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons
A pair as inseparable as siblings, with “shared nerd tendencies” — once again, this is a no-brainer. After inhabiting the characters of Simon and River Tam, Sean Maher and Summer Glau are experts at portraying this type of relationship.
