'S.H.I.E.L.D.' Casting Call Reveals All-New Characters

Though it's set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joss Whedon's planned "S.H.I.E.L.D." television series truly looks committed to becoming its own original entity. Case in point: not a single familiar name from Marvel lore can be found in the list of "S.H.I.E.L.D." characters revealed this week.

TV Line has descriptions for five of the main characters featured on the "S.H.I.E.L.D." pilot from Whedon, his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen. Among those names are Skye, Agent Grant Ward, Agent Althea Rice, Agent Leo Fitz, and Agent Jemma Simmons. Not a Coulson, Hill or Fury in the whole bunch!

Read on for more info about each character.

Skye is described as "fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm." On the flip side, Grant Ward is the opposite of fun, "the kind of guy that grows on you" despite having "a bit of a temper." Rice is even further isolated on the social spectrum, described as a "hard-core soldier" with "crazy skills" but experiences that have left her "quiet and a little damaged." She's also called "The Cavalry," which is pretty sweet.

Fitz and Simmons are noted as an inseperable pair with an almost "sibling-like relationship," so judging by Whedon's history, at least one of these guys is going to die horribly and suddenly. (Kidding? Maybe?) Having come up through training together, Fitz and Simmons' "relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry."
