Andrew Garfield, Marc Webb Back For 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Here's some exciting news to kick off your weekend, "Spider-Man" fans: Sony Pictures has officially announced that Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield will be returning for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

The film was announced before "The Amazing Spider-Man" even hit theaters and is due out on May 2, 2014. Sony adds that Emma Stone is also in talks to reprise her role as Gwen Stacy, but we doubt that it will take very long for her to officially come on board as well.

"We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker," Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad said in the press release. "We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide."

It seems as though Sony and Fox Searchlight have worked out a solution to their conflicting interests with Webb. Fox had the "(500) Days of Summer" director contractually obligated to direct another picture following his successful first feature, but that conflicted with Sony's timeline for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." A report came out claiming that Fox would free up Webb now if he agreed to a two picture deal instead of just one, but it's unclear if there was some other solution that was reached instead. After all, a two-picture contract would definitely jeopardize Webb's commitment to the inevitable "Amazing Spider-Man 3."

While "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" could have worked without Webb, we're really excited that it doesn't have to. Webb's vision and creative ideas helped "The Amazing Spider-Man" succeed, and we hope he continues to experiment with his filmmaking in this upcoming movie.
