Can’t wait to see which new Marvel superheroes will be popping up in the “Avengers” sequel? Well, neither can we! Last week, we discussed the possibilities of adding The Vision to the team in “The Avengers 2.” This week we’ll be moving on to someone who’s been a consistent member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the past two decades. Hell, she’s even got “Marvel” in her name!

Carol Danvers, better known as Ms. Marvel, made her first comic book appearance in 1968 but didn’t actually develop any sort of superpowers until 1977. Now, Ms. Marvel is one of the heaviest hitters in the entire Marvel universe, on par with the likes of both Thor and The Hulk. So what are the chances that we’ll be seeing her in 2015’s “Avengers” sequel?

Read on for more about Danvers and how she could fit into Marvel’s future.

Managing to overcome gender-typing and sexism in a predominantly male work environment, Carol Danvers establishes herself as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and as a highly respected CIA agent. As a result, she’s hired as the Chief of Security over at the NASA headquarters in Cape Canaveral. It is here that she first crosses paths with the recently deceased scientist turned Kree hero named Dr. Walter Lawson a.k.a. Captain Marvel.

Eventually, Captain Marvel is forced to save Carol’s life and the two of them become romantically intertwined. Soon after, Captain Marvel’s nemesis, Yon-Rigg, kidnaps Carol and she is subsequently caught in the explosion of a forbidden piece of Kree technology called the Psyche-Magnetron. As a result of the blast, Carol discovers that she has developed superpowers similar to that of the Kree hero. It is then that she decides to become the superheroine known as Ms. Marvel.

Besides the fact that there is currently only one female member of The Avengers, Ms. Marvel is about as formidable an ally as they come. Being a perfectly rendered human/Kree hybrid, Carol’s body has become practically indestructible making her resistant to bullets, blades, and most types of poison. She also possesses superhuman strength, endurance, stamina, and can fly at roughly half the speed of sound.

In order for this to work, we first need to be introduced to the technologically-advanced alien race known as the Kree. But with the Chitauri being introduced in “The Avengers,” it’s only a matter of time before the Kree start popping up (which will hopefully help pave the way for the Skrulls). That being said, we could easily see Carol Danvers being introduced in Joss Whedon’s “S.H.I.E.L.D.” as a CIA agent/U.S. Air Force official with appearances from the Kree and Captain Marvel early into the first season. That way, we’d be well up to speed on who Carol Danvers is and how she ultimately becomes Ms. Marvel by the time 2015 rolls around.

In Assembling Avengers, we’re picking a new Marvel Comics superhero every week and arguing why they deserve a spot on the roster for Earth’s mightiest sequel. Let us know which heroes you want to see in the next “Avengers” in the comments or on Twitter!
