Good news and bad news, starting with the bad: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje doesn’t seem likely to play T’Challa in a “Black Panther” movie anytime soon. The upside? He’ll still be making his Marvel with a very big role.
Variety reports that the “Lost” actor has joined the cast of “Thor: The Dark World,” director Alan Taylor’s sequel to the hit Marvel Studios film. Akinnuoye-Agbaje will be bringing his unique brand of intimidation to the dual role of Algrim the Strong and Kurse, one of the film’s major villains.
In the comics, Algrim is the most powerful of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. His leader, Malekith the Accursed — played in the film by Christopher Eccleston — coerces him into doing battle with Thor. Once he’s defeated, he’s healed and transformed into Kurse, a super-strong warrior that makes both Algrim and Thor look like infants.
It’s great to see AAA, one of my favorite actors, landing such a major role — but even though it’ll be great to see him in “Thor,” I wish he could have landed a bigger part in a Marvel movie, like Black Panther, a role he very clearly wanted not too long ago. But any movie that sees the former Mister Eko doing battle with Thor should well be worth the price of admission.
“Thor: The Dark World” strikes theaters on November 8, 2013.
