Depending on what you think of the guy's films, what follows may or may not qualify as "Super" news: according to reports, James Gunn is the man Marvel wants helming "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Gunn's name appeared as the frontrunner for the "Guardians" gig over the weekend, with a few other filmmakers mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter as being up for consideration as well should he turn down the gig. Those directors include "Bring it on" and "Yes Man" director Peyton Reed, as well as "Half Nelson" duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.
Best known for directing the Rainn Wilson-starring, superhero-centered dark comedy "Super" and his scifi horror comedy "Slither" with Nathan Fillion (start your Star-Lord fan casting campaigns now!), Gunn's selection as "Guardians" director is nothing short of inspired, continuing Marvel's tradition for selecting great, if unexpected, filmmakers for their projects. The deal isn't finalized yet, but if Gunn gets the job, you can count on a "Guardians" movie that will wholeheartedly embrace its space-faring adventure while mixing in a healthy dose of laughter, all of it earned. In short, a great choice.
