With “Avengers” being such a mega hit, and with plans in the works for a Guillermo Del Toro-produced “Hulk” television series (among other possible programs), it was only a matter of time before Marvel started considering tying their big screen offerings to the smaller one.
Such a plan is now in the earliest stages of development, according to a new report from Deadline. Marvel’s TV division and ABC are reportedly looking into creating a drama series that takes place in the same universe as Joss Whedon’s “Avengers.”
“I hear that the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel, but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster,” the Deadline report continues, adding that the drama is little more than “a kernel of an idea” at the moment. Numerous possibilities are reportedly being explored, “including a high-concept cop show.”
That “high-concept cop show” could rather easily be the S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff so many fans have been craving. Though the Nick Fury-led operatives are expected to have a big role to play in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” there’s still no word on when or if those agents will be getting their very own movie. A TV show could be an excellent compromise, though many of the fan-favorite characters — Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson’s Fury, for example — would likely have to take a seat; those names are probably a bit too marquee to headline a primetime television series.
