Nicolas Winding Refn is going from “Drive” to… “Barbarella”?
It seems like that will be the case, according to Deadline. The director is reportedly teaming up with producer Martha de Laurentiis (wife of “Barbarella” movie producer Dino de Laurentiis) and Gaumont International Television to bring the classic comic book series to the small screen. The trio are looking to turn “Barbarella” into a television show the same way that Gaumont did with Bryan Fuller and “Hannibal.”
Refn will direct and executive produce the series, Deadline reports, but he still has plenty of film work on his plate; he’s currently wrapping up “Only God Forgives” and then goes on to “Logan’s Run.” Previously, Refn wrote and produced the Danish drama “The Chosen 7,” but that only lasted one season back in 2001.
On the surface, a “Barbarella” TV show doesn’t seem quite like the director’s cup of tea except, apparently, it is. According to Deadline, Refn called Barbarella “one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters.” Gaumont CEO Katie O’Connell continued, “We are thrilled to have secured the rights from the Forest estate and are thrilled to be pairing the bold visceral style of Nicolas Refn with the pop culture icon ’Barbarella.'”
Barbarella started off as a comic book character created by Jean-Claude Forest, but later became an icon thanks to Jane Fonda’s portrayal of her in the 1968 movie “Barbarella.” Our hope is that Refn will go back to the character’s comic book origins in this adaptation. De Laurentiis will probably have a thing or 10 to say about the story as well, as Dino was working on a movie remake of “Barbarella” before he passed away in 2010.
