'Wanted' Director Promises 'Great Twist' For Sequel

Have no fear, "Wanted" fans: James McAvoy's bullet-bending assassin-guild adventures are far from over.

Movement has been devastatingly slow on the "Wanted 2" front, yes, but now director Timur Bekmambetov apparently has "a great idea" for the long awaited sequel that could very well push the project ahead at full speed.

"An unbelievable thing happened three weeks ago," Bekmambetov told The Playlist during a recent "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" press junket. "Because we stopped, we didn't know what to do for three or four years. Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it. And now I think we're on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking."

Shocking how? Bekmambetov wouldn't say. He did confirm, however, that McAvoy's newly energized assassin will very much be at the center of the sequel.

"It's a continuation of the story, with Wesley Gibson," he said. "Other people are dead, you know, we can't bring them back. The story is the same character, same mythology, but it's got a great twist."

The filmmaker's suggestion that the dearly departed members of the "Wanted" cast—Angelina Jolie's leading lady chief among them—"can't" be brought back indicates that Jolie really and truly is gone from the series. But count us among the (hopefully) many folks rooting for a "Wanted" comeback; if nothing else, Bekmambetov's new enthusiasm is very infectious.
