“Iron Man 3,” “Thor 2,” “Captain America 2.” These are the Marvel Studios movies coming our way next. But we also know that there’s a still-untitled superhero flick in development at the House of Ideas, with speculation ranging from “Guardians of the Galaxy” to “Doctor Strange” and beyond. But if one source is to be trusted, it’s a different hero altogether one that hails from Wakanda.
El Mayimbe at Latino Review reports that Marvel’s first standalone movie following “Captain America 2” will be none other than “Black Panther.” Screenwriter Mark Bailey was hired to write “Black Panther” in January 2011, and according to what El Mayimbe hears, “the script is fantastic.”
In the comics, the man behind the Black Panther mask is T’Challa, the King of Wakanda, a fictional African nation that serves as one of the most technologically advanced countries in the entire Marvel universe. In addition to starring in several of his own solo adventures, Black Panther has made numerous appearances as a member of the Avengers so if the rumors of an impending “Black Panther” movie are true, then the inclusion of T’Challa in the next adventure of Earth’s mightiest heroes is pretty much a foregone conclusion.
“The clues were always there,” El Mayimbe writes. “They showed Wakanda on the map in ’Iron Man 2’ and Captain America’s shield is made from Vibranium which also hails from Wakanda.”
We’ll stop short of calling the “Black Panther” news officially confirmed, but it’s a very exciting prospect all the same. Let the fan casting begin… personally, my vote still goes towards “Oz” and “Lost” veteran Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who spoke with us about the role back in 2009.
