The MTV Movies team was a huge fan of the latest "The Avengers" trailer, and apparently we weren't alone. Disney announced that the teaser for the upcoming ensemble Marvel superhero flick has broken the record for the trailer most downloaded on iTunes in a 24-hour-period. Turns out it was downloaded 13.7 million times in the day after its release.
That means it beat out "The Dark Knight Rises," which was the previous record-holder at 12.5 million downloads. Of course, it's worth noting that "The Dark Knight Rises" had stolen that record from "The Avengers'" earlier trailer, which earned 10 million views over the course of a few days. Still, 13.7 million in 24 hours is an insane amount of buzz.
This year will be a battleground to see which superhero film will come out on top. With these numbers, "The Avengers" seems to be tracking best, but it also comes out first (on May 4). "The Amazing Spider-Man" hits theaters July 3 and "The Dark Knight Rises" debuts on July 20, so both of those movies have plenty of time to amp up their promotion once "The Avengers" comes out and is out of their way.
At this point, it is hard to tell which film is at the front of the race. All three seem like they're certified box office successes, but one will likely come out on top. All three "Spider-Man" movies were massive success stories, while "The Dark Knight" is the third highest-grossing film of all time. "Iron Man" was the most successful Marvel adaptation (and also its first in the lead-up to "The Avengers"), but neither it nor its successors ever made quite as much of an impact as the precursors to the other superhero competition this year.
Fortunately I'm not a betting woman, because I have no idea which superhero film I should place my money on this year.
