Is Dwayne Johnson Playing Hercules For Brett Ratner?

by Ryan Rigley

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been popping up practically everywhere as of late. Whether it be “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” or even the promos for the upcoming WrestleMania XXVIII, this widely recognized actor/wrestler isn’t going away any time soon. It’s no wonder then that MGM has been eyeing him for the role of Hercules in their newest blockbuster “Hercules: The Thracian War.”

Variety reports the possible casting. Helming the project is director Brett Ratner, best known for his work on films such as “Tower Heist,” “X-Men: The Last Stand” and both “Rush Hour” movies. The script, written by Ryan Condol, is an adaptation of 2008’s “Hercules: The Thracian War” graphic novel, written by Steve Moore and released via Radical Publishing.

“Hercules: The Thracian War” follows Hercules, Son of Zeus, as he rejects the gods of Olympus and turns to bloody battle as a means of finding peace with himself. Throughout the course of Hercules’ journey he takes on six other companions, each sharing his innate bloodlust and love for battle. These men and women don’t care who, why, or where they’re fighting so long as they get paid.

Eventually, the news of Hercules and his band of violent miscreants travels to Thrace where the King subsequently hires them to train his entire army. With the help of Hercules, the Thracian army becomes one of the best in all the land. But when he witnesses the Thracians practicing their newfound skills on innocent men, women, and children, Hercules begins to question himself and the King who has hired him.

Casting Johnson as Hercules could be a very smart move on MGM’s part. If there’s anyone that could fill the half man/half god’s battle-torn sandals, it’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. In the comics, Hercules wears a lion’s head pelt into battle. There are few things as awesome as the thought of The Rock wearing a lion’s head on top of his own.
