'Marvel Super Hero Squad: Comic Combat' Launches

Marvel's "Super Hero Squad" toy line has maintained a successful presence since its inception five years ago. The little action figures – basically weird, deformed dwarf versions of Marvel superheroes – have since spawned their own Cartoon Network show, an online game, and are now making their way back to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii.

"Marvel Super Hero Squad: Comic Combat" is not only novel for its incredibly long title, but the game also takes advantage of publisher THQ's new uDraw GameTablet.

The game, available now, allows you to take control of ten playable Marvel superheroes, tasked with stopping Dr. Doom and his minions. The characters included are Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Invisible Woman, Wolverine, Falcon, Squirrel Girl, and Reptil.

Gameplay is spread over six stages set in locations like Sanctum Sanctorum and the Baxter Building. "Comic Combat" is essentially a cartoony brawler, though what differentiates it from similar titles is the unique input from the uDraw tablet. You can evoke a character's special move by drawing the shape on the tablet, for instance. Shaking the entire tablet causes the game-world to vibrate like an earthquake.

I haven't had any hands-on time with the game, so it's hard to really describe how well THQ's new tablet device might interact with "Comic Combat." The uDraw kind of looks like a DigiPro or Wacom tablet, save the addition of standard gaming buttons. What I would really like to see from THQ is a comic-themed game that allows me to actually draw my own superhero into the game, a la "Drawn to Life."

"Comic Combat" is available now for $40 ($30 on Wii). The new uDraw GameTablet is $80 ($70 for Wii).
