Captain America And More ‘Marvel Universe’ Character Models Revealed

Marvel Universe,” the massively multiplayer online game from Marvel and Gazillion Entertainment is – well, it’s out there somewhere on the horizon. The game has been under development in its current iteration for a couple years, and details have been rather slim. Today, Marvel released images of four character models – Wolverine, Captain America, Deadpool, and Cable – that will be showing up whenever the game actually launches.

The free-to-play online game, allowing you to play as a character in Marvel’s comic book world, has suffered its share of roadblocks. The game was originally under development with Cryptic Studios, a developer well-acquainted with crafting massive superhero titles thanks to their own series, “City of Heroes.” The studio seemed like a perfect match, but the project was cancelled a few years ago. Cryptic would take the then unfinished game and later turn it into “Champions Online.”

Gazillion Entertainment was brought on board a year later, and they have already created one online title in “Super Hero Squad Online.” While that game was created with younger players in mind, “Marvel Universe” will hopefully appeal to a wider audience. We don’t know much yet, but the “Marvel Universe” story focuses on Dr. Doom as the main villain. The game’s narrative is penned by Brian Michael Bendis.

While DC’s own massively multiplayer game is playable on both PC and PlayStation 3, “Marvel Universe” has only been announced as a PC release. That’s likely in no small part due to the fact that “DC Universe Online” is owned by Sony Online Entertainment. While it’s entirely possible “Marvel Universe” could end up on consoles, it seems unlikely.

There is currently no release date set for the game.
