Listen, we love Tom Hardy – the guy’s great in “Inception,” utterly menacing in “Bronson” and we’re really looking forward to “Warrior.” But being completely honest, we were somewhat taken aback when the average-sized British actor was cast as the hulking, monstrous Bat-villain Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.” Now, Hardy has responded to some of those concerns.
In an interview with CineMovie, Hardy talked about nerds like us who want a Bane that can benchpress a Buick, but pointed out that it’s just not possible to meet fan expectations for pre-existing characters.
“So many people love him,” Hardy explained. “And when you step into that role – you are going to fail. And be judged.”
While he recognizes that he’ll never be the monstrous gorilla that some fans might want, that doesn’t mean that Hardy hasn’t bulked up for the role. After hitting 179 pounds of mostly muscle for his role as an MMA fighter in “Warrior,” Hardy gained even more mass for “The Dark Knight Rises,” getting up to a respectable 190 pounds.
In the audio interview, Hardy also mentions that against the advice of friends he does sometime read Internet comments about his being cast as Bane. Ultimately though, he believes that fans will need to put their trust in him to do the best job he can, just as he trusts director Christopher Nolan.
