'Avengers' Stars Recall 'Crazy' First Assemblage Of Superheroes

The biennial D23 Expo took place this past weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center, where fans and reporters were treated to an early look at all things Disney. But of everything the company currently has in the pipeline, the project that had everyone the most excited was “The Avengers.”

While the new footage debuted at the show hasn’t made it to the Internet (not yet, at least), MTV News did manage to catch up with many of the 2012 film’s stars, including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). While the castmembers were reluctant to give anything away about the heavily anticipated superhero team-up flick’s plot, they were willing to talk about how surreal it was when the Avengers finally assembled.

“That was pretty crazy,” Hemsworth admitted. “It was not only meeting Robert Downey and Scarlett and whoever, but it was meeting Iron Man and Black Widow and Hulk…. [I]t’s exciting.”

Johansson agreed with Hemsworth, mentioning that one of her favorite moments was when the cast was all brought together. Perhaps surprisingly, her co-star, Renner, explained that there were only two days when the entire team was on set at the same time.

The castmembers also spoke out about their "Avengers" costumes and whether there have been any upgrades since their characters' prior appearances. While Hemsworth and Downey Jr. both admitted their new costumes were more comfortable this time around, the “Iron Man” star felt the need to qualify the statement.

“I don’t know how ‘comfy’ an iron suit will ever be,” Downey Jr. joked. “Unless you’re into that thing.”

Renner and Johansson were even less convinced about their costumes, characterizing them as a couple of “metal suits.” When told that Downey Jr. seemed pleased with the changes in his gear, Renner even had a possible explanation for us.

“He’s done quite a few other movies, so I think they’ve worked out the kinks in his, perhaps,” Renner theorized before adding, “There’s nothing comfortable about superhero costumes.”

In addition to Downey, Jr., Hemsworth, Renner and Johansson, “The Avengers” also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston and others, and is helmed by fan-favorite director Joss Whedon, who also wrote the film’s script. “The Avengers” will finally hit theaters on May 4, 2012.
