Kevin Bacon Joins ‘R.I.P.D.’ As Villain

Kevin Bacon chewed on an extraordinary amount of scenery in “X-Men: First Class” this summer, and thankfully for all of us, it looks as though he’s far from finished with the comic book scene.

According to Variety, Bacon’s once again setting his sights on the paneled page with the developing adaptation of “R.I.P.D.,” the Dark Horse project that stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as a pair of mismatched police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department, a task force that consists of deceased cops.

Few details are known about Bacon’s exact role in the movie, save for the fact that he’s playing a bad guy. But one can guess that his character has a part to play in the death of Reynolds’ character; in the story, the murdered Reynolds agrees to 100 years of duty on the undead squad in exchange for the chance to track down his killer. If Bacon’s a villain, and Reynolds is looking for the guy who pushed him into the afterlife, then it’s not too much of a leap to think that the erstwhile Sebastian Shaw has at least a behind-the-scenes role to play in our hero’s death.

All of that is speculation for now, of course. But there’s no speculation about this fact: just the mere presence of Kevin Bacon doing his bad guy thing opposite Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges is enough to get me excited for a project that already had a strong hold on me.
