Another Contender For 'Superman' Reboot Villain?

Michael ShannonWe're still early in the development of Zack Snyder's "Superman" reboot, with only three of the film's leads cast at this point. And while there's no shortage of rumors regarding who might be contending for a part in the film, it looks like we can add yet another name to the list: Michael Shannon.

According to Deadline, the next order of business in casting the film involves finding an actor to portray the as-yet-unidentified villain, and the "Boardwalk Empire" and "Take Shelter" actor is one of several being eyed for the role.

If you haven't seen either of the aforementioned projects featuring Shannon, there's also a chance you might've seen him in a blink-and-you-miss-it moment in "Jonah Hex." The actor spoke to MTV News early in 2010 about playing Doc Cross Williams in the much-maligned film starring Josh Brolin, though his role appeared to have been reduced significantly in the theatrical cut of the film.

As far as which villain Shannon could play in the film, rumors point to General Zod — a Kryptonian criminal — facing off against Superman (Henry Cavill) in the much-anticipated reboot of the Warner Bros. franchise. "Lord of the Rings" actor Viggo Mortensen was initially rumored for the role, but Snyder recently stated that Mortensen would not be in the film.
