Black is predominantly a writer, though there is no word yet on whether he’ll be asked to take a pen to the sequel’s script.
Black and “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr. previously worked together on “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” which was the director’s debut as well as his only feature at the helm… until “Iron Man 3,” most likely.
“Kiss Kiss” is also notable for getting Downey’s career back on its feet after a string of troubled years. The actor has really come into his own since then, evolving from the likable leading man in his early years to the full-fledged global superstar that he’s become now.
As a writer, Black is not a newcomer to humor-tinged action. He penned all four scripts in the “Lethal Weapon” series, as well as “The Last Boy Scout,” “Last Action Hero,” “The Long Kiss Goodnight” and “The Monster Squad.” He also wrote “Kiss Kiss” — and if you saw that one, then you should know already that Black and Downey work well together.
Fans who are still distraught over Favreau’s departure can take solace in this hiring. Even if “Iron Man 3” feels different, there’s no denying that the director/star pairing is an already-proven formula.
