"The Avengers" director Joss Whedon wasn't always charged with bringing Earth's Mightiest Heroes to life on the big screen — once upon a time, his major comic book movie debut was supposed to come earlier in the form of "Wonder Woman," based on a screenplay he wrote himself.
Although his script was celebrated by those who read it, Warner Bros. ultimately passed on the project, leaving Whedon's take on the Amazon warrior to languish in that big old comic book movie graveyard in the sky.
That doesn't mean that Whedon hasn't still considered Wonder Woman's big screen chances, even if he's no longer involved with the project. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Whedon revealed who he would have wanted to see cast as Princess Diana: none other than Angelina Jolie.
“For me, Wonder Woman was basically Angelina Jolie,” he revealed. “She spends a lot of time flying around. She works in a lot of different countries. She’s very global. And she’s appalled by the way people treat each other.”
Jolie isn't an unfamiliar quantity in the comic book circuit, having starred as Fox in director Timur Bekmambetov's adaptation of "Wanted." She's also been rumored for Catwoman in a third "Batman" movie and Ava Lord in "Sin City 2," but by our count, this is the first time that Jolie has been mentioned as a possible contender for "Wonder Woman."
Frankly, Whedon's argument is sound — the actress certainly embodies all of the qualities that the filmmaker listed — but one has to wonder if at 35, she's perhaps a bit too old to play the character these days.
