'The Walking Dead' Vs. Brett Favre: How The Vikings QB Played A Role In The TV Series' Premiere

"The Walking Dead" television series premieres on Halloween night, but as perfect as that timing seems to be for AMC's adaptation of the popular post-apocalyptic zombie comic, it wasn't the original schedule the network had planned. According to "Walking Dead" creator (and television series executive producer) Robert Kirkman, the network punted on its original premiere date after realizing it would be going head to head with Minnesota Vikings quarterback and future Hall of Fame inductee Brett Favre.

"Can I talk out of school? I don't know if I can [say] this, but that wasn't our original launch date — which I think is the funniest story ever," Kirkman told MTV News during New York Comic Con earlier this month.

"Our original launch date was the the Sunday before," he explained. "It's launched with [Fear Fest], so they were actually going to launch it at the end of the first week and then show the second episode on Halloween night, so you'd get two episodes during [Fear Fest]. But that guy — I don't know who he is, Brett Favre-something — is playing the Green Bay Packers on Sunday and apparently he used to play for that team, so it's like a big deal or something."

And there you have it, folks. If yuo want to know why you haven't seen the first episode of "The Walking Dead" yet, look no farther than Minnesota's 41-year-old gunslinger. (As if he wasn't the recipient of enough grief lately.)

While the game is now in our rearview mirror, Kirkman admitted at the time tat Halloween is a much better fit for the series' premiere — even if the reason for scheduling it that way cracked him up.

"They didn't want to be up against that football game," said Kirkman. "So we got bumped for a football game ... I thought that was fascinating. I was like, 'Really? We're moving?'"

"But Halloween night makes a lot more sense and I think [the premiere] is going to be a really big deal," he added.

"The Walking Dead" premieres Halloween night, October 31, at 10 PM EST on AMC. The series stars Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey DeMunn, Laurie Holden, Chandler Riggs, Sarah Wayne Callies, and Steven Yeun, among other notable actors.
