‘Iron Man 3’ Release Date Announced

Robert Downey Jr.’s days as Tony Stark are far from over. In addition to starring in “The Avengers” in 2012, it looks as though the crime-fighting billionaire is returning to his very own franchise just one year later.

In an update to the story that Paramount Pictures is transferring the distribution rights for “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3” over to the Walt Disney Company, Deadline reports that the third “Iron Man” now has an official release date. According to the report, ol’ Shellhead will fly again on May 3, 2013.

A third installment in the “Iron Man” series was all but guaranteed given the massive success of the first two films. “Iron Man,” directed by Jon Favreau and starring RDJ as a reckless military industrialist who sets his sights on protecting the innocent after an enlightening period of captivity, was the first film released by Marvel Studios and Paramount, paving the way for the slate of films building up to “The Avengers” including “Thor” and “Captain America.”

The success of that first movie spawned an even more successful sequel, adding new faces to the Marvel Cinematic Universe including Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Don Cheadle as War Machine, occupying the role played by Terrence Howard in “Iron Man.” Before the sequel’s release, Favreau was already eyeing a third film in the series, contemplating topics ranging from the movie’s villain to whether or not he would shoot the picture in 3-D.

While “The Avengers” is clearly one of the most highly anticipated films on Marvel’s schedule at the moment, “Iron Man 3” is sure to give it a run for its money. Stay tuned to Splash Page as we learn more about the project.
