NYCC: 'Superman/Shazam!' Writer Talks Plot And Origin Of Upcoming DC Animated Short

A few months ago, we brought you the news of a brand new animated short featuring Superman, Captain Marvel, and Black Adam that will be included in the upcoming collection of DC's popular animated shorts. Titled "DC Showcase: Superman/Shazam! - The Return of Black Adam," the short will feature Jerry O’Connell as the voice of Captain Marvel, George Newbern as Superman, Arnold Vosloo ("The Mummy") as Black Adam, and James Garner as The Wizard.

During this weekend's New York Comic Con, I caught up with "Superman/Shazam" writer Michael Jelenic, who offered up some details about Captain Marvel and Black Adam's debut in DC's critically praised series of animated shorts.

"Captain Marvel's just one of the coolest characters," said Jelenic. "He's got a great back story. He's Superman, but he's Superman as a kid, and there's so much wish fulfillment going on with that character, where if I was a kid I could actually become Superman."

"That's the cool aspect of this character, and then to throw [Captain Marvel] in there with Superman and Black Adam, you've got three of the most powerful characters in the DC universe battling each other," he teased. "It's pretty cool."

While some of DC's animated shorts have found inspiration in existing story arcs or one-shot comics, Jelenic said the plot of "Superman/Shazam!" will be "its own thing," and feature an original story involving the trio of characters.

"We've seen Superman and Captain Marvel together before, and usually when we get that pairing, it's these characters fighting each other," he explained. "We wanted to do something different, so in this story they're more or less teaming up against Black Adam, so we're trying to figure out how we get that sort of feel, and do something different, but still be respectful to the comics that have come before it."

"DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection" hits shelves November 9 with "Superman/Shazam!" included on both the DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the release.
