Emma Stone Is Gwen Stacy In 'Spider-Man'

Emma StoneSo, Emma Stone really has hit the jackpot with a role in the "Spider-Man" franchise's forthcoming reboot — except it's not what we thought it was.

In a press release, Sony Pictures announced that Stone is joining the series not as Mary Jane Watson, but as Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's ill-fated first love. Stone is the second actor to join the cast of director Marc Webb's "Spider-Man" alongside Andrew Garfield as your friendly neighborhood web-head.

“It’s been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma’s star rise as an actress," said Columbia Pictures president Matt Tolmach of the casting announcement. "She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill.”

“The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice," added Webb. "At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”

Stone's enlistment in the "Spider-Man" franchise marks yet another milestone in her continued relationship with Sony. She's previously starred in "Superbad," "The House Bunny" and "Zombieland" for the studio. The actress most recently appeared in "Easy A" for Screen Gems.
