'Smallville' Begins Casting Darkseid's Minions

America OlivoDuring the San Diego Comic-Con International, it was confirmed that Darkseid and the evil New Gods of Apokolips will be heavily featured during the tenth and final season of "Smallville." And while there is currently no announcement as to who will portray Darkseid on the series, two of his primary followers have already been cast.

Steve Byers (pictured) will play Desaad and Michael Daingerfield will step into the role of Gordon Godfrey in the third episode of the season, according to Kryptonsite. The episode is entitled "Supergirl" and also features the previously announced return of Laura Vandervoort as Kara.

Desaad is one of Darkseid's main henchmen in the original "New Gods" stories by Jack Kirby. In the miniseries "Legends," Glorious Godfrey — another agent of Darkseid — took on the name Gordon Godfrey as he led a campaign of fear and hate against all superheroes.

Byers is perhaps best known for his roles in "Falcon Beach" and "Wild Roses." He has also appeared on "CSI: Miami," "The Dresden Files" and "Mutant X." As Kryptonsite points out, he actually seems like he may have been a better fit for Darkseid's son Orion, rather than the relatively scrawny Desaad.

Daingerfield has previously guest starred on "Smallville" in the third season as an assassin. He has also appeared in "Stargate SG-1," "Tru Calling," "Catwoman," "Supernatural," "The Dead Zone" and "The 4400" in addition to extensive voiceover work on "George of the Jungle," "Iron Man: Armored Adventures," "Transformers: Cybertron" and "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective;" in which he played the title role.

Sahar Biniaz and Bradley Stryker are set to debut as Hawkgirl and Deadshot in the second episode of the season, with John Schneider confirmed to appear as Jonathan Kent in the season premiere.

"Smallville" will kick off its tenth season on Friday, September 24.
