How did Joss Whedon end up behind the camera for "The Avengers"? When Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige stopped by Splash Page HQ last week, that 's one of the many questions we peppered him with in an effort to find out exactly how the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator wound up directing Captain America, Iron Man, and the rest of Marvel's mighty heroes.
“I’ve known Joss for many years, we were looking for the right thing and he came in and met on it,” explained Feige. “As you’ve already heard him say on his panels, he’s incredibly intelligent, he’s got great things to say about it, and if you look at the directors we’ve worked with, we hire directors who have the potential to do great things and we want our film to be that great thing.”
Feige went on to say that Marvel looks to hire directors “on the verge” of greatness, as it were. “Whether it’s [Kenneth] Branagh who of course has done some great things, whether it’s [Jon] Favreau , who did some fun movies prior to 'Iron Man,' we want to find a director that’s on the verge of doing something great, as we think Joss is.”
Do you think Whedon is "on the verge" of greatness? What prior TV/film project makes him already great? Let us know what you think in the comment section or on Twitter!
