The cast for AMC's television adaptation of "The Walking Dead" is mostly filled out, but one key character — Carl Grimes, the young son of protagonist Rick and his wife Lori — has remained vacant. Up until now, that is.
Bloody Disgusting reported yesterday evening that actor Chandler Riggs has landed the role of Carl in "The Walking Dead," and MTV News has confirmed the report with the network itself. Riggs joins an impressive cast that includes Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeffrey DeMunn, Jon Bernthal, Laurie Holden and Steven Yeun.
Briggs, who turns eleven years old later this month, is local to Atlanta, Georgia where the pilot episode of "The Walking Dead" is currently filming. His previous screen credits include "Get Low" and "The Wronged Man."
In the "Walking Dead" comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, Carl is an innocent young boy who managed to survive the initial zombie outbreak thanks to the assistance of his mother (Callies) and Shane (Bernthal), the police officer partner to the abandoned Rick (Lincoln). Carl's family is reunited when Rick manages to find the survivor's camp on the outskirts of a plague-ridden Atlanta. As the series progresses, Carl is forced to grow up quickly in light of the increasing atrocities that have become so commonplace in the post-apocalyptic zombie landscape.
The first episode of "The Walking Dead" debuts on AMC this coming October. The series has already received a six-episode order for its first season.
