Rumor Roundup: 'Spider-Man' Heroes And Villains, And The 'X-Men: First Class' Magneto

Spider-ManNot a day goes by without a new casting rumor hitting the 'Net, and this week was full of 'em. Of course, most of the rumors turn out to be exactly that, having been cooked up to generate some online buzz or the product of an overheard comment by the assistant to someone's assistant to someone's assistant (and so on). Occasionally, though, a rumor ends up being true.

We're not sure which side of the fence the latest batch of rumors will end up on, but in the interest of keeping you posted about the latest buzz (and allowing you to judge for yourself whether there's any truth to them), we've collected some of the unofficial, unconfirmed scoops making the rounds recently.

From the actor potentially tagged to play Magneto in "X-Men: First Class" to the conflicting gossip about the "Spider-Man" hero (and villains), here's what everyone's debating. Who knows? Maybe one of the rumors will be true!

Has "Spider-Man" Found Its Peter Parker?

Various sites are reporting that Sony is on the verge of announcing the new Peter Parker for its planned "Spider-Man" reboot. The problem? None of them can agree on which actor will be slinging webs when Spidey returns to the big screen in 2012.

According to Bleeding Cool, "Adventures of Tintin" star Jamie Bell has landed the role. Bell was one of five rumored contenders for the role in a recent, anonymously sourced report that hit the 'Net, but Sony has declined to comment on his involvement.

Contradicting the previous report, however, is a HitFix nugget (buried near the end of the post) that "Zathura" actor Josh Hutcherson is getting closer to the role, and even shot some test footage as Peter Parker.

Since both reports are based on anonymous sources, it's difficult to give either one the edge — but heck, that's exactly the sort of speculation our comment section is made for!

Forget About Peter Parker — What About The "Spider-Man" Villain?

Over at Showbiz411, there's another anonymously sourced report that "Jonah Hex" actor Michael Fassbender is being pursued to play an unknown villain in the "Spider-Man" reboot. There's no indication which member of Spidey's rogues gallery he could play, but speculation seems to run the gamut from Elektro to Mysterio.

Personally, I'm still pulling for Hypno Hustler. My own anonymous sources assure me that the villain is being considered as sort of an over-arching threat that the new franchise will build toward — sort of like The Mandarin in the "Iron Man" movies.

"X-Men: First Class" And The New Magneto?

In the same Showbiz411 report mentioned previously, it's also indicated that Fassbender could play a young Erik "Magneto" Lehnsherr in director Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class." According to the report, Vaughn is chasing Fassbender for the role after nailing down James McAvoy to play a young Charles Xavier.

And that's where we stand with the latest rumors buzzing around the world of comic book movies, folks. As I mentioned earlier, they should all be considered unofficial, unconfirmed, and untrue until we get official word from the studio, actors or filmmakers — but heck, that doesn't mean we can't talk about them!
