Sarah Wayne Callies is breaking out of prison and into the realm of zombies, becoming the latest actor hired for AMC's highly anticipated adaptation of "The Walking Dead."
According to Entertainment Weekly, the "Prison Break" actress has landed the leading female role of Lori Grimes, the wife of series protagonist and small town police officer Rick (Andrew Lincoln). She joins the previously cast Lincoln, Jon Bernthal as Rick's police partner Shane and Jeffrey DeMunn in an undisclosed role.
In Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" comic book series, Lori is one of the survivors of the initial zombie outbreak after escaping town with Shane and her son Carl while Rick is comatose in a hospital. After reuniting with her husband, the two must overcome some personal difficulties in addition to the surrounding carnage.
Eventually, Lori plays a pivotal role in one of the book's darkest moments — one that won't be revealed here due to spoilers, of course. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how faithful the AMC series sticks to the character's comic-book trajectory.
Callies is best known for her role on "Prison Break" as Doctor Sara Tancredi, a recovering morphine addict who forges a romantic bond with brilliant escape artist Michael Scofield. Ironically enough, Wentworth Miller — the actor who plays Scofield — is also fighting zombies on the big screen as Chris Redfield in the forthcoming "Resident Evil: Afterlife."
