Michael Rosenbaum Will Not Return To ‘Smallville’

Following the news that “Smallville” has been picked up for its tenth season and recent hints in “Absolute Justice” that Lex Luthor survived his apparent death in Season 8, speculation has mounted that Michael Rosenbaum would return to the series and reprise his role as Clark Kent’s greatest nemesis.

A recent post on Rosenbaum’s Twitter account regarding “good news coming soon” was taken by several fans as potential confirmation that Rosenbaum would come back to “Smallville” during the tenth season. However, a later post from Rosenbaum (caught by Kryptonsite) emphatically denied the rumors.

“Sorry,” wrote Rosenbaum. “It’s not ’Smallville’ related. I’ve already stated that I’m not returning. I’d never lead you guys on like that. I appreciate your support.”

Rosenbaum left the series at the end of the seventh season following a devastating confrontation between Lex Luthor and Clark Kent at the Fortress of Solitude. Luthor briefly reappeared in the eighth season heavily scarred (and portrayed by another actor) before he was seemingly killed in an explosion set by Green Arrow.

Given the severity of his injuries, extensive plastic surgery could be used as an explanation for Luthor’s changed appearance if the “Smallville” producers decide to bring him back with another actor in the role.

Alternatively, the series may continue to focus on other villains. Earlier this year, comic scribe Geoff Johns hinted that Darkseid and the forces of Apokolips may play a part in the rest of this season and beyond.
