Chris Evans Offered 'Captain America' Lead?

Chris EvansThe long road to casting the lead role in "The First Avenger: Captain America" could be nearing its end, with actor Chris Evans offered the Marvel Comics' hero's iconic red, white and blue uniform.

While there's been no official word from Marvel Studios or Evans' representatives at this point, The Hollywood Reporter claims that the "Fantastic Four" actor has been offered the role of soldier-turned-superhero Steve Rogers. According to the report, Evans would commit to up to three movies based on the character if he accepts the role, as well as "The Avengers" and other unnamed Marvel movies.

If Evans is indeed offered the role and accepts, it would be the fourth live-action comic book movie he appears in (not including 2007's animated "TMNT" movie, in which he voiced Casey Jones).

Evans previously played Johnny Storm in both "Fantastic Four" movies, and will play Jensen in the upcoming movie "The Losers," based on the DC/Vertigo series by Andy Diggle and Jock. He will also portray skater-turned-actor Lucas Lee in Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World," based on the comic book series by Bryan Lee O'Malley.

While it wasn't based on a comic book, Evans also played a super-powered character in "Push," the 2009 film directed by Paul McGuigan.

Evans was a relatively recent addition to the list of rumored "Captain America" contenders, joining the pool of actors alleged to be in the running for the role just over a week ago. "Tron Legacy" actor Garrett Hedlund and "Generation Kill" actor Wilson Bethel were also in contention with Evans, according to reports, though Bethel recently announced he was no longer being considered. "G.I. Joe" actor Channing Tatum had also been mentioned as a potential candidate, and Ryan Phillippe confirmed to MTV News last weekend that he had auditioned.

Previously, the leading candidate appeared to be "The Office" star John Krasinski, with many sites reporting he was all but certain for the role.

Hugo Weaving is reported to be in talks for the role of Captain America's nemesis, The Red Skull.
