Following the continued box office success of the latest “Twilight” film, Taylor Lautner — who is best known for his role as teenage werewolf Jacob Black — might soon trade in his claws for superpowers.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Lautner is being pursued by Paramount to star in a live action adaptation of “Max Steel.” If he signs on, Lautner would play Josh McGrath, a 19-year-old extreme-sports athlete who is exposed to highly advanced nanotechnology that allows him to transform into his superhuman alter-ego, Max Steel.
Screenwriters J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani have signed on to adapt the script. Lavin and Damiani are also attached to write two superhero movies based on Rob Liefeld’s comics: “Capeshooters” and “Youngblood.”
“Max Steel” originally aired as a CG animated series back in 2000 that ran for three seasons as well as six Direct-to-DVD movies. “Max Steel” was also adapted into a toyline by Mattel. While the series has fallen by the wayside in the US, “Max Steel” is still one of the highest selling toylines in the world — especially in Latin America.
Paramount is particularly interested in positioning “Max Steel” as another potential movie franchise after their success in adapting more famous toy properties like “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers” into blockbuster films. Paramount is also reportedly eager to cast Lautner in order to capitalize on his newfound popularity with young women.
