"I just finished writing the script a few months back, and Blur is working on a lot of test stuff," Powell explained in an interview with Comic Book Resources. “Fincher is working on a film right now, so we're waiting for him to get some space so we can start showing some of this stuff off. I'm pretty happy with everything so far. We've just got to work to get to the next point. This is a slow, long process."
However, Powell was unable to say whether Fincher would direct “The Goon” or take on the role of a producer. "David's going to be heavily involved,” Powell said. “I've worked with him and Blur quite a bit to get the screenplay together, and it's been a great experience so far."
“The Goon” was created by Powell in 1999 and follows the paranormal misadventures of the titular muscle-bound brawler and his sidekick, Franky. The animated adaptation was announced at last year’s San Diego Comic Con. Veteran actors Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti have been rumored to portray The Goon and Franky, respectively.
Earlier this year, Powell told MTV News why he believes “The Goon” should be animated instead of being adapted to live action. "I always felt that the material would work better animated, just because of the bizarre nature of the characters and the atmosphere of the stories."
"I have the feeling the Adult Swim crowd is there, and that wasn't there before," continued Powell. "And films like 'Beowulf' have come out that aren't family-style animated films. I think the doors are opening. American audiences are starting to embrace different types of material animated."
