Archie Comics Forms Film And Television Partnership With CAA

With so many comic books making the leap from paneled page to film reel, it was just a matter of time before somebody got the bright idea to bring Archie and his pals to the big screen.

Variety reports that Archie Comics Publications has forged a partnership with the Creative Artists Agency.

According to the report, CAA is seeking “to create branded entertainment opportunities in film and TV,” meaning that Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead—plus a whole host of others—could be heading to theaters.

In addition to the proper “Archie & Friends” characters, Archie Comics also owns brands including “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Josie and the Pussycats,” both of which have already been seen on television and film. Other properties include “Cosmo the Merry Martian,” “Super Duck” and “Dotty and Ditto.”

The news comes hot off the heels of Archie Comics’ announced partnership with Dark Horse Comics in an attempt to reprint classic “Archie” stories in “Archie Archives” hardcover volumes. Each volume is estimated at around 200 – 250 pages with a price tag of $49.95. Archie Comics and Dark Horse are hoping to release the series of archives indefinitely.

As for film and television treatments, there’s plenty of ways to go with an Archie-centric adaptation. While starting off with the controversial Archie-marries-Veronica storyline might not be the wisest idea for an uninitiated audience, it could be an interesting sequel opportunity. Another question, of course, is whether or not we’ll see a live-action “Archie” or an animated version — or, perhaps, both.

It’s very early to say how the “Archie” property will pan out, but as long as I have a big screen “Jughead” at some point in my future, I’m a happy camper.
