'The Green Hornet' Production Begins, Tom Wilkinson & David Harbour Join Cast

The Green HornetThe day that many thought might never come has finally arrived. "The Green Hornet," for all the roadblocks and pitfalls it experienced along the way, has begun production.

According to an announcement by Columbia Pictures, the Michel Gondry-directed, Seth Rogen-starring film has officially started production in Los Angeles, California.

The release date's change to December 17, 2010 is also confirmed by the press release, and while several long-rumored casting notes are also verified, there are some new additions as well.

As previously reported, Jay Chou has joined the cast as Kato and Cameron Diaz is also on board as Rogen's love interest. It also seems that Edward James Olmos's off-the-cuff remark about starring in "The Green Hornet" has panned out, as his name is listed amongst the credited actors.

Nicolas Cage, however, is only mentioned as being in negotiations for the movie—meaning his involvement isn't quite as set in stone as once believed.

Two new casting additions include David Harbour and Tom Wilkinson. Harbour is best known to genre fans for his role in "Quantum of Solace." Wilkinson, meanwhile, is no stranger to comic book fare, having played Gotham's local crime boss Carmine Falcone in "Batman Begins." He also previously collaborated with director Gondry on "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

The crew for the film consists of "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" director of photography John Schwartzman, "The Matrix Revolutions" production designer Owen Paterson, "Speed Racer" costume designer Kym Barrett and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" editor Michael Tronick.

With most of the major players seemingly in place—assuming that Cage's casting goes through—then "The Green Hornet" should be in fine shape to hit its December 2010 release date. How long until we start seeing some set photos? Let the betting begin!
