This Week's Best Bets: 'G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra' Movie Invades Comic Shops

G.I. Joe: The Rise of CobraIt's going to be an expensive week for comic book readers. Not only is Marvel Comics flooding the shelves with 40 new issues, but various other publishers are bringing their A-game to the week's releases, too.

What should readers with an eye toward movie/television crossover projects be adding to their lists? Here's a good place to start:

"G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA" #1 - OFFICIAL MOVIE ADAPTATION (IDW): We gave you a sneak peek at this comic back in May, and as any longtime comics fan will tell you, there's been a lot of great G.I. Joe stories told in comics over the years. IDW's already proven they're up to the task of doing great work with licensed properties like Transformers and Angel, so there's reason to be optimistic about their take on the world of the "G.I. Joe" movie.

Deadpool"DEADPOOL: MERC WITH A MOUTH" #1 (Marvel): Deadpool is a popular guy on both the comics and movie fronts these days, so it's no surprise that Marvel is kicking off a new ongoing series featuring the popular assassin-for-hire. Once again, we gave you an early look at the series a few weeks back, and there was something about that image of Deadpool carrying the disembodied zombie-fied head of his alternate-universe counterpart that made this one a must-read item. Brilliant!

Star Wars Invasion"STAR WARS: INVASION" #1 (Dark Horse): Dark Horse adds a new series to its celebrated line of Star Wars comics with "Invasion," and if last month's online preview of the series on is any indication, it's going to be worth checking out. "Invasion" is set 25 years after the Battle of Yavin (from 1977's "Star Wars: A New Hope"), and pits the Jedi against their first major threat since the Sith. Is this the end of Luke Skywalker? We're pretty sure it won't be, but the series is still worth picking up, even if you're not a die-hard Star Wars fan.

Honorable Mention: "Captain America: Reborn" #1 -- Ed Brubaker and Bryan Hitch bring Steve Rogers back from the dead. We all knew it was going to happen eventually, but as Brubaker told MTV News recently, he still has some tricks up his sleeve.
