With Captain America #600, A Hero Is ‘Reborn’ — But Who Is ‘The First Avenger’?

Hate to say we told you so, but… we told you so! As many have predicted over the past few months, Marvel is resurrecting the champ — more specifically, Captain America is coming back to life.

The giant-sized 600th issue of “Captain America” saw a special early release today, accompanied by a Daily News article in which Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada confirmed the revival of Steve Rogers, who was assassinated more than two years ago. Rogers’ return is only hinted at in the new issue, with his full-fledged arrival set for the pages of “Captain America: Reborn,” a five-issue series from Ed Brubaker and Bryan Hitch.

But before the announcement was made, Quesada said that the return of Steve Rogers wasn’t the wildest rumor he’d heard in connection to the new “Reborn” series — some fans were expecting “Reborn” to herald a major Marvel Studios casting announcement.

“I think the craziest [rumor] was the fact that we were going to announce who was going to be cast as Steve Rogers in the ’Captain America’ movie in the pages of ’Reborn,'” Quesada revealed in his Cup O’ Joe column. “And I thought, ’Wow! That is really amazing that people could go that far with it.’ And I guess that’s part of the fun of it, but at the same time it is the evils of the digital age. Stuff gets out there, and before you know it that information is attributed to somebody from Marvel, and it’s off to the races.”

Rumors about who will play Steve Rogers in Joe Johnston’sThe First Avenger: Captain America” have spanned quite the celebrity roster, ranging from Hollywood sensations Will Smith and Matthew McConaughey to upcoming “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” star Channing Tatum.

For now, Cap fans will have to be satisfied with the return of Steve Rogers as a comic book character and not as as a movie star. And why wouldn’t you be? It’s not like his return would compromise the existence of any other characters running around the Marvel Universe in a star-spangled costume. Oh, except for Bucky. D’oh!

Are you excited about the resurrection of Steve Rogers, or do you think it’s too soon? What do you think will happen to Bucky as a result?
