Raimi has Tobey Maguire locked to reprise his roll as Peter Parker, though, and it sounds like he’s ready to make his case to Dunst as well — an actress who he “can’t imagine” making the film without.
“I’m hoping that she is going to come aboard, and I’ve got a meeting coming up with her,” Raimi told Sci Fi Wire. “I think she would like to. But I don’t want to speak on behalf of her.”
The “Drag Me to Hell” director has already said that he would like to work with Dunst again for the new sequel, the details of which are being closely guarded. Raimi did reveal, however, that the fourth Spider-Man film may take Peter Parker in a new direction.
“I hope that we just [look] ever deeper into the truth of who Peter Parker really is — as a human being and the unique character, and that we celebrate that, which is a lot of the reason I want to make this next picture,” the director explained. “I still believe I have an understanding of Peter Parker as the character that I have not quite put onto the screen yet.”
Given that Raimi is determined to retake the creative control he had during his first two “Spider-Man” movies, the floor may be clear for him to tackle that unrealized vision.
However, not getting Dunst to return would be probably mean one of two options: replacing the actress soap-opera-style with another Mary Jane, or perhaps bringing in the Marvel Universe’s resident reality-altering dealmaker Mephisto at the beginning to make Peter forget he ever met anyone named Mary Jane. Dunst seems eager and willing, though, so hopefully it won’t come to that.
