News on the “Green Lantern” front has been ratcheting up lately with word that the film will shoot in Australia this September with Martin Campbell at the helm. As the shoot date nears, fans are scratching their heads wondering who will play Hal Jordan. According to two reliable sites, the mystery may be over soon – sources suggest that Chris Pine is the frontrunner to play Green Lantern.
IESB broke the news yesterday that “Star Trek” actor Pine is at the top of a short list of desired stars for the “Green Lantern” lead. The rumor mill was fueled further by a report from Latino Review that Pine isn’t just the leading contender – he’s been offered the role. “It’s more than just a rumor… it’s LEGIT!” exclaims Latino Review’s El Mayimbe. “According to my sources, ’THE OFFICIAL OFFER is out to Chris Pine for the role.'”
Yet despite Latino Review’s “scoop,” rival news outlet Collider is challenging claims that Chris Pine has been offered the coveted role of Hal Jordan.
“I’m sorry to be the one to report that these stories are just NOT true,” writes Collider’s Steve “Frosty” Weintraub. “At least according to my source, and mine is the same one that said Anton Yelchin wasn’t in the running either. Trust me, the person I’m speaking with would know. While Latino Review and IESB have definitely broken a lot of casting stories, this is not going to be one of them.”
IESB also lists Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) and Nathan Fillion (“Firefly”) as contenders, though they are older than Warner Brothers’ desired “under 30” age range. Sam Worthington (“Terminator Salvation“) is also a possibility, though IESB states: “Chris Pine seems to be the top choice.”
As production on “Green Lantern” continues to accelerate, an official casting announcement shouldn’t be too far off. Whether Chris Pine will land the role remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – be it IESB, Latino Review or Collider, someone’s destined to eat some crow.
